Difference in John Bunyan Works editions

Hi,

I'd like a little history on the editions of John Bunyan's collection of works. It seems they started to pop up around the 1870s. There is one with 3 volumes and one with 1 volume. Is there any significant difference between the two?

I'd like to buy one as a gift so any recommendation as to "better" editions or publishers would be welcomed. Thanks.

I have found the three volume set is edited by George Offor. The one volume is edited by John P. Gulliver.

I've got the 3 volume set which can be found here, among other venues ; 0801007240 - Whole Works of John Bunyan 3vol by Bunyan, John - AbeBooks

It is the George Offor edition and I would expect that a 1 volume edtion would be heavily abridged, or in extremely small print and cumbersome. These 3 volumes are really done well, and are "The Whole Works Of John Bunyan." The title page notes that they are "accurately reprinted from the author's own editions." This edition is copyright 1977 with sewn binding and good paper. Not sure how the later Baker editions are. There is a 3 volume Banner Of Truth edition on ebay now, and finally, if it is for a gift, perhaps the single volume Pilgrim's Progress 1895 reprint by BOT would be nice. I have a copy and it is first rate as far as font size and what have you.

Thanks. I think I will go with the 3 volume set. I saw the set published in 1977 by Baker and it looks nice. Green spine with gold lettering and illustrated, right? I'm trying to decide between that and a first edition 3 volume set by Blackie and Son (1861-63). It's a difference of $50 vs. $200, but we drew names for Christmas gifts this year and our budget is $150-200.

Yes that is the one. I am not familiar with the Blackie & Son, but the aforementioned 3 volume set is one of my prized possessions. Your friend will love it. I would just contact the seller to make sure the text block is clean. I have an aversion to underlining, highlighting or margin notes in used books.

The Baker is a copy of the 1875 edition. I hadn't noticed it before, but it is an edition originally issued by Blackie & Sons. So I can only assume the map was not included in that 1875 edition.

Interesting. Nice set. From the photos it appears that the map may have been a fold out insert. Possible that it may have been included with the Baker set, but missing from my second hand copy ? Not sure, and probably no way of finding out from Baker at this late date. I'll have to be happy with the PDF. Glad you brought up this thread, or I would never have known it existed.
