Hi,

I'd like a little history on the editions of John Bunyan's collection of works. It seems they started to pop up around the 1870s. There is one with 3 volumes and one with 1 volume. Is there any significant difference between the two?

I'd like to buy one as a gift so any recommendation as to "better" editions or publishers would be welcomed. Thanks.

I have found the three volume set is edited by George Offor. The one volume is edited by John P. Gulliver.

Both editions contain:
- Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners
- The Jerusalem Sinner Saved
- Come And Welcome To Jesus Christ
- Of Justification By An Imputed Righteousness
- The Strait Gate
- A Discourse Touching Prayer
- Reprobation Asserted
- Questions About The Nature And Perpetuity Of The Seventh-Day Sabbath
- Of The Trinity And A Christian
- Of The Law And A Christian
- Christian Behaviour
- A Caution To Stir Up To Watch Against Sin
- A Confession Of My Faith, And A Reason Of My Practice
- Differences In judgment About Water Baptism No Bar To Communion
- Peaceable Principles And True
- John Bunyan's Catechism, or Instruction For The Ignorant
- Bunyan's Last Sermon
- The Pilgrim's Progress: First Part
- The Pilgrim's Progress: Second Part
- The Holy War Made By Shaddai Upon Diabolus, For The Regaining Of The Metropolis Of The World
- The Heavenly Footman
- Solomon's Temple Spiritualized
- The Barren Fig-Tree
- The Life And Death Of Mr. Badman (This May Be Considered The Third Part Of The "Pilgrim's Progress")
- A Few Sighs From Hell
- One Thing Is Needful
- Ebal And Gerizim

The one volume set is missing the following works:
- Introduction to the Pilgrim's Progress
- The Greatness Of The Soul
- The Work Of Jesus Christ As An Advocate
- Christ: A Complete Saviour
- Saved By Grace
- Light For Them That Sit In Darkness
- A Treatise On The Fear Of God
- The Doctrine Of The Law And Grace Unfolded
- Israel's Hope Encouraged
- The Saint's Privilege And Profit
- The Acceptable Sacrifice
- Paul's Departure And Crown
- The Desire Of The Righteous Granted
- The Saints' Knowledge Of Christ's Love
- Of Antichrist And His Ruin
- The Resurrection Of The Dead, And Eternal judgment
- Some Gospel Truths Opened According To The Scriptures
- A Vindication Of Gospel Truths Opened According To The Scriptures
- A Discourse On The Pharisee And The Publican
- A Defense Of The Doctrine Of Justification By Faith In Jesus Christ
- Scriptural Poems
- An Exposition On The First Ten Chapters Of Genesis
- A Holy Life: The Beauty Of Christianity
- A Discourse Of The Building, Nature, Excellency, And Government Of The House Of God
- Bunyan On The Terms Of Communion, And Fellowship Of Christians, At The Table Of The Lord
- On The Love Of Christ
- A Case Of Conscience Resolved
- Seasonable Counsel
- An Exhortation To Peace And Unity
- The Holy City, or The New Jerusalem
- Discourse On The House Of The Forest Of Lebanon
- The Water Of Life
- A Book for Boys and Girls

The three volume set is missing:
- Divine Emblems, or Temporal Things Spiritualized
- A Relation of the Imprisonment of Mr. John Bunyan
- A Brief Account of the Author's Call to the Work of the Ministry
- Mr. John Bunyan's Dying sayings
- A Brief Account of the Author's Imprisonment
- A Conviction of Mr. Bunyan's Life
- A Brief Character of Mr. John Bunyan

I've got the 3 volume set which can be found here, among other venues ; 0801007240 - Whole Works of John Bunyan 3vol by Bunyan, John - AbeBooks

It is the George Offor edition and I would expect that a 1 volume edtion would be heavily abridged, or in extremely small print and cumbersome. These 3 volumes are really done well, and are "The Whole Works Of John Bunyan." The title page notes that they are "accurately reprinted from the author's own editions." This edition is copyright 1977 with sewn binding and good paper. Not sure how the later Baker editions are. There is a 3 volume Banner Of Truth edition on ebay now, and finally, if it is for a gift, perhaps the single volume Pilgrim's Progress 1895 reprint by BOT would be nice. I have a copy and it is first rate as far as font size and what have you.

Thanks. I think I will go with the 3 volume set. I saw the set published in 1977 by Baker and it looks nice. Green spine with gold lettering and illustrated, right? I'm trying to decide between that and a first edition 3 volume set by Blackie and Son (1861-63). It's a difference of $50 vs. $200, but we drew names for Christmas gifts this year and our budget is $150-200.

Yes that is the one. I am not familiar with the Blackie & Son, but the aforementioned 3 volume set is one of my prized possessions. Your friend will love it. I would just contact the seller to make sure the text block is clean. I have an aversion to underlining, highlighting or margin notes in used books.

One more question, does your edition contain the order of salvation map?

Regrettably no, doesn't appear to have the map. I looked all through the 3 volumes and I don't think I would have missed it. Surprises me that it is not included, as there are many illustrations, and some of them of a complex nature. The edition in the post that you linked to is the 1737 edition. The Baker is a copy of the 1875 edition. I hadn't noticed it before, but it is an edition originally issued by Blackie & Sons. So I can only assume the map was not included in that 1875 edition.

Thankfully the PDF was linked in that other thread. http://www.puritanboard.com/f15/joh...-causes-salvation-damnation-74842/#post954109 I did not know it existed, and I'm glad to have it on my PC if not in the hard copies. BTW, the text block on these 3 volumes is 10"x7". They are quite a handful, but when you see how much material is included, you will realize they had to be that large to have readable text.

This makes me think the Blackie & Sons edition has the map.

Interesting. Nice set. From the photos it appears that the map may have been a fold out insert. Possible that it may have been included with the Baker set, but missing from my second hand copy ? Not sure, and probably no way of finding out from Baker at this late date. I'll have to be happy with the PDF. Glad you brought up this thread, or I would never have known it existed.
