| | Another Round of "Help Backwoods Decide What to Read"
Allrighty. I finished R.T. France's excellent Matthew commentary and as I said previously I would like to continue reading commentaries. However the Mark commentary I purchased will not be here till Friday. So I need something to read in the meantime and that is where you wonderful folks come in.
In the poll will be listed 5 books. Thanks for your vote!

I voted for Edwards. It was one of the best books I read last year, and I plan to read it again this summer.

I suggest you read the Bible Genesis through Revelation.

But seriously that is kind of the plan with the commentary reading. I am going to read a medium-length non-technical commentary on each book.

Can you go wrong with Pilgrim's Progress?
I just read the Philosophy of Revelation...I may simply be a moron, but much of the book is dated and refers to contemporary science such that b/c certain ideas are out-dated, what Bavinck says is nearly irrelevant.
The first 200 pages or so have some really good stuff, though.

I'm reading Linguistics for Students of New Testament Greek by David Black. Fascinating.

I assume you've read Pilgrim's Progress before, but I voted for it anyway. Can't have too many readings of that book. And, if you haven't read it yet, read it now!

Gordon Clark gets a bad rap but I think everyone interested in expanding their mind should read him, so I suggest some books by him.

Both Edwards and Alexander are very good on the affections (Alexander uses the same framework laid down by Edwards). Someday it would undoubtedly be good to have both read. However, I personally enjoyed Alexander a bit more. |

What, Finney wasn't an option? Why don't you tackle the Left Behind corpus?
I voted for Murray since that is a book I have been wanting to read since purchasing it a few months ago.

Though I am going to. (Then Edwards, Alexander, and Murray then Bavinck)
Thanks all!

Good choice Ben.
IMO, every preacher should read PP every couple of years, it keeps the story & the language fresh in your mind & that book is a goldmine of sermon illustrations.

PP is not only a good read, but a great listen as well. I have listened to the MP3 version and found it quite engaging.

Bunyan is the only author with reformed doctrine whose writing is not only great theology, but simply great writing in itself. Warfield and Candlish, and to a lesser extent Calvin, are good writers, but they do not have a style which is classic. Whereas Bunyan can be ranked in the company of people like Sir Thomas Browne.

Bunyan and Edwards (in that order) would be my choices if you had more than 3 days to read. Since you don't, Murray.
