Reformed Expository Commentaries

Tim Challies has just made a blog post about the Reformed Expository Commentaries. Currently, you can only get hold of commentaries on Esther and Ruth, Zechariah, Galatians, James, Hebrews, and 1 Timothy.

Has anybody read any of these? There is an extract from the first five chapters of Hebrews available, which looks pretty good.

I have the one on Hebrews by Richard Philips. It reads very much like a collection of sermons (which no doubt it originally was). It is evident that the author has consulted many of the same standard commentaries that I was using while I was preaching through Hebrews, both modern and Puritan. Therefore, the content is distilled from the more academic commentaries and the Puirtan commentaires as well. Ocassionally there are some helpful applicatory insights and I did consult it for this reason. The author also treats rather large sections of the book at a time which really makes it feel cursory after dealing with Owen (who is maybe a bit too copious!)! It is orthodox which is more than can be said about most commentaries these days but very basic.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote a great commentary on Romans, as did Tom Schreiner.

I think they are all excellent. They cannot be all things to all people. They are intended, however, to model good expository preaching. And that they do very well. I sat under Ryken's and Phillips's preaching at Tenth, and can confidently tell you that you could not do much better than these commentaries for what they are intended to do.
