R.C. Sproul's New Commentary on Romans

will be published in September in the new series "St. Andrews Expositional Commentary." This is a large two-volume (1000 pages) expository commentary on Romans. Definitely one to check out when it comes.

I'm sooooooooo excited about this! A friend and I were just talking about why he does so much topical work and doesn't do commentaries! We were just about to write him and tell him to get on that! . Do you know when it will come out? If not, can you remind us when it does come out. I'm sort of like a "out of sight out of mind" type of person.

Lane,

Do you know whether Dr. Sproul believes that Romans 7 is speaking of believers? I think he does.

I think this could be a marvelous contribution.

This new 2-volume hardback set (clocking in at just under 1,000 pages, and published by Crossway Books) consists of nearly 60 sermons Sproul preached at St. Andrews Chapel in Sanford, Florida, from October, 2005 through April, 2007. Sproul has been pastor there for 12 years.

Should be good stuff.

Supposed to come out in September, according to the WTS bookstore website.

So this is going to be a 'Lloyd-Jones'-esque commentary?

I am cautiously excited and optimistic. I have always loved Sproul but he seems a bit sloppy at times, ya, as if I am somehow superior, not in the least, just an observation.

I am bemused. Do we need another commentary on Romans?

Or is it that you folks would be excited at ANY commentary if RC Sproul wrote it?

Which makes it more exciting?

The oddest thing about my Arminian friends, at my workplace, was that they loved to listen to R.C. Sproul on the radio an, yet, they seemed to have no clue R.C. Sproul teaches on reformed doctrines or Calvinism. I'm wondering if the Arminians really don't understand those topics and fall into the ~still~ "Not Understand" catagory: ... cannot understand spiritual things (1 Cor. 2:14), ...is unrighteous, does not understand, does not seek for God (Rom. 3:10-12). Oddly, a gay art director marched into the room and flicked the radio to off and marched out. Radio have been off ever since.

Groan. As if reading 1,000 pages of semons is how I want to work through Romans. I have Lloyd-Jones and (to a lesser extent) Boice for that.

We definitely need more commentaries on Romans. We will always need more commentaries on Romans. Think about this: Romans is inexhaustible. There is always more light to shine from these pages, and Romans is about as dense theologically as you can get. Especially in the post-Sanders era, we need commentaries aware of the newer challenges to justification. I would think that Lloyd-Jones, Boice, and Sproul (and also whoever will fill the Reformed Expository Commentary series on that book: I have no idea who yet) will be an extremely powerful combination for the preacher's model. Of course, that it is Sproul is an added bonus. I think he takes the slant that Romans 7 is about the believer (something Moo does not do, of course).

I have found Sproul to normally be pretty good. I am looking forward to seeing this work. Of course, I was excited to hear of his 3 volume exposition of the WCF, and was a bit disappointed after I read it.

He wrote those for the average person. They really are not meant for the deep theological studier. He stated this about them and I think he achieved his goal quite nicely. I know ppl who can't read Berkhof but got a lot out of Truths We Confess. I of course love Berkhof and Sproul and each for very different reasons. I still have not read my Hodge that I bought forty years ago...

Of course we need more commentaries on Romans. We need more commentaries on the Bible, because humankind has yet to discover all the richness of theology and doctrine within it. For example, if there were a sermon posted on each verse of the Bible, that does not mean that preachers quit writing sermons and each preacher just shares the posted sermons. It's the same thing with commentaries, there is just too much to comment on that there will never be an end to writing commentaries. Critics and false teachings continuously develop and therefore must be continuously fought.

I know that Sproul was born in 1939, but does anyone know just when in that year? What is his birthdate? Beyond the year, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I know it's hard for you using dates seeing as you were born when the year was measured in three digits.

Just curious. In Googling him, the couple of sources I've seen have only his birth year. Is he keeping his birth date a secret?

Now, about his credit card...
