| | | Hendrikson N.T. Set or ????
I would like to preach through Genesis and Romans this year at my church. Then I plan on preaching through Exodus and I Corinthians if the Lord wills.
I have a lot of commentary sets on CD, and of course what the internet offers. However, I struggle reading on the computer screen (it gives me a headache). So, I plan on either purchasing Hendrikson's N.T. Commentary Set with my Christmas money, or buying Genesis, Exodus, Romans, and I Corinthians in the New International Commentary Set.
Which do you guys recommend? If I go with Hendrikson I know I have a complete NT set at a great price. And like I said, for the OT books I would like to preach through I always have my CD sets and I also have the complete Barnes and Henry set in my library.
Thoughts?

If you have some money to shell out you could perchase Gill's commentary.
A bit of an expense though. I can't remember how many volumes are in the thing but it's about 250 bucks.
If you have Gill on disc you could always print the sections you want to read. If you have a printer of course. (that's what I do)

Thoughts? | This doesn't directly answer your question, but when you preach through Exodus get Currid's (EP) commentary and Motyer's (Tindale) commentary. Both are inexpensive, and both are outstanding.

I think if you can only get Hendriksen's set or commentaries on all the books you're planning to preach on, that you're going to miss some good commentaries on the OT books if you go with Hendriksen (much as I like him).
If you can find Candlish on Genesis that is a truly remarkable book.

I'd stay away from Hendricksen on Romans. As I understand, it was the last commentary he wrote before his death in 1982; he was in his last illness, and more than one person has told me that it isn't very good. Simon Kistemaker, of course, took over the series after Hendricksen's death.

Thanks, bro. I have access to Gill on my computer though. I know I said it gives me a headache to read my computer, but I would hate to pay for something I already have.

I haven't preached through Genesis or Romans yet, but I have gone through Exodus. Currid is (IMO) unequaled in modern evangelical, Reformed scholars. He has incredible archaeological background, and his linguistic skills are fabulous. His commentary is preacher-directed, not esoteric-scholar directed (I hate those!). Motyer may be my favorite modern English commentator.

Thoughts? | Go for Enns and Childs on Exodus; I would not recommend buying a set, it is hit or miss - even if it is done by two scholars.

I just got Hendrickson for Christmas. I spent about 4 hours with the Gal. volume yesterday & I was very impressed. I can already tell that I am going to use this a lot.
