| | | Commentaries subverting empire I read Brian Walsh's transforming vision, which was good except for his horrendous appeals to Ron Sider. He came out with a commentary on Colossians which highlights the anti-Caesar cult in Paul's theology (which would be helpful for a church coming under persecution for not participating in Caesar Worship).
And then someone recommended a work on Genesis 1 that also had a similar thrust: Amazon.com: Colossians Remixed: Subverting the... Amazon.com: The Liberating Image: The Imago Dei...

"The Reformation was a time when men went blind, staggering drunk because they had discovered, in the dusty basement of late medievalism, a whole cellar of 1500-year-old, 200 proof grace—a bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly. The word of the gospel—after all these centuries of trying to lift yourself into heaven by worrying about the perfection of your own bootstraps—suddenly turned out to be a flat announcement that the saved were home-free before they started. Grace was to be drunk neat: no water, no ice, and certainly no ginger ale." – Robert Farrar Capon

I agree - however, faithfulness in carrying out the Reformed faith necessitates working toward a eschatological realization of it which is anti-statist in it's scope. I would be interested in your opinion as to what is the main reason for the decline of Reformed Christians failure or neglect in this area? We certainly don't find this to be the case during the era of orthodoxy in England or in the establishment of the United States.

Rushdoony that the Reformers were so suspicious of the ecclesiastical megalomania of the Roman Catholic "Church" that they were not as wary of state power as they should have been. Thus many Protestant churches were Erastian, and even Calvin's commentary on Isa. 49:23 is basically a Christian Welfare Statist manifesto (though I agree with him about church establishment). |

Yikes! At this rate, he will be using Methuselah (Metushélach -מְתוּשֶׁלַח / מְתוּשָׁלַ) for an avatar before long!!!
