Another GREAT Free Deal - 1,000s of classics

I am a regular user of several of the standard software programs (Logos/Libronix, WordSearch, PC Study Bible, Quick Verse, Pradis, Ages, etc.).

The NEW e-Sword ver. 9 was released last month. It is COMPLETELY free, full featured, and faster than most of the high end programs. I strongly commend it to you as a cost-effective way to build your library or supplement it.

The lay out is quite attractive, the use of tabs for dictionaries, commentaries, and Bibles is very user friendly. And, there are some third party folks who have GREAT add ons. Plus, it is improved from the already excellent ver. 8. It even has original language helps, parsing guides, pop-ups of Scripture when you hover your mouse over the reference, and Strong's based word study materials.

e-Sword - the Sword of the LORD with an electronic edge
    82 FREE Bibles
, including 6 Greek Testaments, 2 Hebrew Bibles, LXX, Vulgate, 2 Chinese, 4 German, 5 Spanish, even Icelandic! BTW, the KJV, ESV, and Geneva are also free.

16 FREE Commentaries/sets, including a number of multiple volume works such as Keil and Delitzsch, John Gill, Treasury of David, Barnes' Notes, etc.

14 FREE Dictionaries, including BDB, Thayer, Strong's, ISBE.

    8 FREE graphs and mapsets
, including American Bible Society Maps, 2008 CIA World Factbook, Classic Bible Maps, Dore Woodcuts, Historical Atlas, NASA Satellite Images, etc.

MANY FREE extras such as the Ante-Nicene Fathers, Josephus, Creeds of Christendom, Fox's Book of Martyrs, History of the Christian Church, Calvin's Institutes, Edersheim, Roark's systematic, etc.

    100 CLASSIC
books in STEP format and a STEP reader built in.

If you want to add to that wonderful collection, there are some items you may purchase. I added the Baker's NT Commentary series (REFORMED) by Hendriksen and Kistemaker for under $60!!! They also have a great Word Study package from AMG, lots of Bibles, and other books for sale (eStudySource.com - Download Bestselling Digital Bibles & Study Tools!).

But, here is the real treat: a number of GREAT Reformed and classic items are available on third party sites.

One web site, e-Sword Users | e-Sword Essentials & More!, lists 2,085 downloads as of this evening. Here are a sample of titles . . .

Other sites have the complete Calvin's Commentaries, Barclay's commentaries, Boettner, complete works of Pink, Ryle, Kuyper, Turretin, Baxter, Boston, Bonar, Bunyan, Burroughs, Carroll, Curt Daniel, Fairbairn, Flavel, the NET Bible/notes, even an English based analysis of textual variants in the NT!!!

In other words, you can build yourself a VERY nice library for free. If you have a few $$$, you can add to it some great premium resources such as Baker's NT Commentary.

If you don't have Bible software already, this would be a GREAT time to begin building a digital library, at least as a back-up to your print library.

BTW, it even has a cool Harmony of the Gospels that allows you to change to any translation (English, Greek, Latin, etc.) "on the fly."

Sorry, I don't believe that Mr. Myers (eSword's creator) intends to produce it in a Mac version.

There is, however, an online version:

Do you have a version of e-Sword for MAC?

I won't be developing a version of e-Sword specifically for MAC, but I have created an online interactive version: "e-Sword LIVE". Just visit the following URL and register to get access to all features: http://live.e-sword.net

One thing that I found was missing on the update is the Westminster Confession and Catechisms.

I do love this program though. It does run on Mac (if you have a virtual machine running Windows).

There is one problem with the update in that there is no scripture navigation tree on the left any more. To switch books or chapters, you have to make several clicks in a little box above the Bible text. For this reason alone, I decided not to run the newer version.

Also, there are electronic books that I don't think are available in the new e-Sword format. It took a long time for me to find some of these, and I don't want to loose them.

True, but F2 and you are there . . . presto. I find it easier than the old tree because you have the Bible book, chapter, and verse . . . all in one box at the click of F2.

As to books in the old format . . . the site I posted e-Sword Users | e-Sword Essentials & More! has ALREADY converted 100s of modules. And, they have a couple of converters there (also FREE) that take all of about 5 -10 seconds to convert a version 8 resource to version 9.

Great to hear. I thought I would have to give up some of my resources. And if there is a converter, it makes everything okay.

Thanks for this Dennis. I downloaded it recently, but hadn't pursued many of the downloads yet. For Mac users, the Online Bible is a good resource. It has some advantages to eSword, but probably not as many resources available - especially in light of the third party sources.

    The Macintosh Online Bible

I have both, use e-Sword often, but do most of my work with Logos.

I figured out the converter. Once you install you run it and a box opens to choose the source of the file and the destination of the file. I was confused about the source and figured out you have to go to your e-sword folder under Programs and select the file there that was already installed and then also choose the same folder for the destination of that file. In other words same source/destination. It works on some and not on others. Still trying to figure it all out.

NO. The Platinum deals are with the Wordsearch program NOT the e-sword program as I indicated. That is why I gave you the URL for the Doxa software people.

I have been able to get about 75% of my old stuff to convert. However, the first site I listed is working VERY quickly on conversions. During one three hour period last evening they posted several dozen converted resources. I'm not worried that we will be left in the lurch. Converter will take care of much of it, newly posted ver. 9 modules should care care of the rest.

If you use the e-Sword 9 Converter (ver. 5.0), you

    1. Double click on the converter application file and the utility will pop up.
    2. Then, you select the "file to convert" by clicking on the "source" button.
You will see a tree of directories and subdirectories. Select the ver. 8 file you wish to convert (.dct, .cmt, .top, .map).
    3. The "destination" button will be active. Typically, you want to locate it in c:\program files\e-Sword.
    4. Once you have a file to convert and a destination, clicking on convert takes only a very few seconds.

I have both, use e-Sword often, but do most of my work with Logos.
I use Logos/Libronix when I want to do searches of large numbers of resources (4,300+). But, with that many resources on board, it is SLOWWWWWWW. Wordsearch is wonderful for dealing with the confessions and certain commentaries. However, the new e-Sword 9 is the slickest, fastest, way to do work with the resources available in commentary/dictionary/Bible modules in e-Sword.

That is what the converter is for. It will turn your .top into a .topx that is readable by version 9.

In short, Microsoft no longer supports the engine that Rick Myers was using for e-Sword. So, the price for remaining current was changing the engine. The 5.0 version converter will turn a .top (or .cmt or .map) into a version 9 module in seconds. There are some modules that will stubbornly refuse to convert (just like some people I know). In such cases, you can wait a few days until the person posting the module upgrades it.

BTW, all of the premium (= ya gotta pay for them) modules at eStudySource.com are ver. 9 compliant.

e-Sword is SOOOO fast (compared to my resource laden donkey of Libronix), that I purchased the Baker NT Commentary (Hendriksen and Kistemaker) to have a GREAT current commentary series to use (along with Calvin, Poole, Matthew Henry, Gill, etc.) along with my studies. It was under $60 (cheaper than the print version!!!).

    Alan,

When you download the zip file and you do the extraction, it will give you three files: eSword9Converter, eSword9Converter.exe, and System.Data.SQLite.dll.

I simply doubleclicked on the first one (139 KB). It should open a window named "e-Sword Converter." It also has a batch mode feature which should work fine too.

I just tried the batch feature (right lower corner in blue). All you need to do is to designate where the subdirectory is with your version 8 modules and the subdirectory where your e-Sword 9 is (typically c:\program files\e-Sword). Hit the convert button and it will go to town. If you have some modules that will not convert, don't sweat it. Simply hit the cancel button when the dialog box comes up and it should continue converting the other files in the subdirectory.

    Beth,

I had the same problem with Poole. Blessedly, about 90 minutes ago, they posted a ver. 9 copy on Poole, Matthew - Commentary (Poole) -9.x | e-Sword Users.

It installed easily on my computer.

A number of the files would not convert for me (and I am not comfortable going in an changing the code the way some have done). So, a few resources will simply await a release on either http://e-sword-users.org/users/node/2869 or http://www.davidcox.com.mx/e-swordmo...s_database.htm. Both of them have been converting the old ones pretty quickly.

Has it been simple to change-over? No. But, for free and for all that you get, it is not such a bad deal.
