| | | Hockey anyone?
Who likes hockey? I do!
My favorite team: the Vancouver Canucks. So far they have lost every pre-season game. Go Canucks!
I also root for all the Canadian teams: Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and even Montreal!
What is your favorite team?

What do you like about the Penguins this year? Strong points, weak points?

| Well for starters, they finally have a competitive team again. The new agreement has really equalized the playing field (ice) in the NHL. They are projected to be playoff contenders which is a new life compared to the dead last Penguins of the last several seasons.
The acquiring of Sydney Crosby was huge. With Lemieux as a mentor, he should certainly meet the high expectations that are forecasted. He is surrounded by veterans unlike the green pre-lockout Penguin team. I couldn't imagine a better mentor and environment for this prodigy. He is amongst enough veterans to work well with and to learn from and he is also among enough young players to really excel and make his presence known.
I am ecstatic about having a premiere net minder for once. Jocelyn Thibault will give some confidence behind the defensive line.
Recchi and LeClair may not be in their primes any longer, but such a young team can only benefit from such a veteran presence. They still have plenty of points left in them. They bring offensive fear back to the line.
I am comfortable with Tarnstrom and Gonchar to lead the defense, and Palffy and Fata are certainly solid at the wings.
It has been a while since I have been this excited for Hockey to start up. The Penguins are back!

| Sounds decent. Are you from Pittsburgh originally or do you just like the team? (I noticed in your profile it says that you live in New Jersey). You don't like the Devils or Flyers?

| No, I am a firm believer in the historic confessions that associate the NJ Devils and the Flyers (and especially the Capitals) with the antichrists of the world.
I was born and raised in a peculiar geographical location when it comes to sports. I just moved to New Jersey five years ago after graduating from college and getting married. I am originally from south central Pennsylvania. If you draw a line between Pittsburgh, Philly, and DC/Baltimore, at the point where those lines all intersect is abouts where I am from. So the home town team was always a mixture of Maryland and Pennsylvania teams. Thus I am a staunch Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Penguin fan. I have always been a NY Giants football fan, but that was due to the first Super bowl I ever saw while I was about seven years old. The Giants beat the Broncos and I was like wow, I am a Giants fan. I was a bandwagon jumper at age seven, so sue me. A friend got me into hockey when I was in the fifth grade. He was from Pittsburgh and almost worshiped the Penguins. That was during their back-to-back Cup wins in the early 90's, so I joined my friend in supporting the then best team in hockey. The Penguins rarely failed to disappoint throughout that decade until recently when they almost went bankrupt.
But it appears times are changing for the better.

| I think the leafs are well-rounded with a good mix of veteran and young players. The young guys are doing very good in the pre-season games, hopefully that will continue. Belfour is back so goaltending is not an issue. They've got the "Big E" this year which should be interesting, not sure how he'll do.
They haven't done great in pre-season (2-4) but this is more of a chance for people to make the squad than win games (as many regulars sit out). I'd like to see who makes the final cut.

| Well, they have these nice blue jersies. And most everyone around here is a Leafs fan. The only other fans around here are Habs fans, and they hate the Leafs. So around here you either love 'em or you hate 'em.
Quinn (the guy who tells them when to get on and off the ice) is playing it cool, not worrying whether he wins or loses. That's how we handle a poor pre-season. If we win all the time, its because all the people trying out for the team are so good; and if we lose more often than win, its because he's giving all the poorer players ice time to see if they're any good.
Actuall, Daniel, this season it going to interesting to watch. Its going to be different, with all the roster changes that have been made. Every team is legitimately starting out a contender. Sports Illustrated has the Rangers coming in last over all in ratings; that's in indicator of what to expect, because with Jagr healthy, with things to prove this time, they won't be pushovers this year. Calgary is expected to be the best, but it won't be the same as the last year they played, with all the changes made in playing style rules. Its a whole new ball game.
And all those changes is what is driving ticket sales right now. The union and the management have not been forgiven. The payback is just postponed because everyone wants to see how this is all going to pan out. You could say that the changes are over-riding any negative reaction from the fans for now. But it will come to a degree once the season is settled in. I expect the midseason Blahs to go deeper this year. But by playoff time the fans will be back, because that's when the real payoff of the CBA takes shape. That's how I see it, anyway.
Living in Southern Ontario is peculiar for hockey. Like I said, you're either a Leaf lover or a Leaf hater; there seems to be no inbetween. You have the regular popular team fans: they were Oiler fans when Gretzky & Co. were there, and then became Ranger fans when they had that big team, and then became Wings or Avalanche fans when those teams were stacked. But generally it either Leafs of Habs, and mostly Leafs. And since there's nothing special about me, I'm a Leaf fan. |

Puritanhead is just messing with you guys... I went to college hockey games... Our team was the best ACC club team for several years in a row... (it all owed to recruiting Canadians, as our school exchanged Canadian pesos with U.S. Dollars on 1 for 1 ratio, which subsidized them at our expense. I'm sure there were scholarships as well.)

My best friend lives in Thunder Bay. He's the minister at the CRC there. If you run into him say Hi for me, will you?
I have a friend living in St. Kitts here who is French in background. He's from Northern Ontario originally. He also says that its either Leafs of Habs there; there are no other teams, not even Senators. If its from Ottawa, they don't like it. I think they half expect Paul Martin to be the coach or something like that. | |
