Fun at Fenway

Quote:
Trailing by seven runs after Brad Penny struggled in the top of the second, the Red Sox sprang into comeback mode, plating four runs in their half of the frame and piling it on from there. Jason Bay hit a two-run homer, J.D. Drew belted a solo shot and Nick Green contributed a pair of RBIs...
It was my son's birthday recently and the one thing he really wanted was to go see a Red Sox game. So, yesterday we ventured into Boston to see the Red Sox vs Orioles game. I'm not much of a baseball fan, I don't follow the game at all, but I must say that yesterday's game against the Orioles was pretty exciting. Coming back from 0-7 to win it, well, what can ya say - go sox! Watching those final pitches in the 9th inning was something else.

And, win or lose, there's just something about being at the park watching the game that trumps watching it on TV any day - the Fenway franks, the peanuts, doing 'the wave', singing "Take me out to the ball game", etc...

...but I do have a question, if there are any baseball fans out there in PB land. Most of the traditions of the game make sense to me, this one tradition I can't figure out...

Ok, I've been to two games in the last two years. At the first one, during the "opening exercises" they had a presentation basically praising Massachusetts for being on the cutting edge of health care reform, leading the way for the rest of the country to follow. Yesterday, they commended the medical people in MA for the outstanding job they're doing, and had a special presentation for a psychiatrist who's doing outstanding work in his field.

It just seems out of place at a ball game. I wonder what the connection is between baseball and that other stuff?

None...although in St. Louis they do have special presentations at the beginning of games, but they mostly relate to the team somehow and their involvement in the community. Often a person who is part of the special presentation will throw out the first ball. I don't know if this is really considered a tradition but more like public relations.

I thought you were going to ask about the Wave, which I consider lame. It didn't start in baseball and it's only been around less than thrity years.
