| | | call me sexist...
I find it grating and otherwise just not right for women to be doing the play-by-play for football games.
I know some will call me sexist whether they believe it or not. I set myself up for that.

sexist (whatever that means). I find play-by-play commentaries annoying anyway.

I don't like when women are featured in slow-motion shots.

Interesting.
I don't have a problem with women commenting on sports, but I do find it annoying when channels make an obvious effort to hire an attractive female sports reporter and they end up with someone who doesn't know anything about the game. I'm mostly referring to the reporters who interview coaches and/or players during halftime and immediately after football games. A few of them have interesting questions. Most of them don't have a clue as to what's going on on the field. My roommate (who is an encyclopedia of football) would do a much better job, but she doesn't have platinum blonde stick straight hair and would probably resist wearing stilettos on a football field, I doubt she'd be hired.

okay, as the resident football guru (self-annointed) I am obligated to chime in here:
Curt - you couldn't be more correct, sexist or not.
Josh - you may be the first person to ever think that, but I guess you are entitled to your own opinion. If you truly want to just watch a game in silence, then I guess you can mute it and enjoy!
Kathleen - I guess you would have to make some specific references, but I can't think of any sideline reporters who don't do a good job of interviewing and having a knowledge of football. I am referring to the NFL games and major college games. All those games that I ever watch, the female reporters all seem to have a clue, regardless of what they look like. If you want to make a case of women reporters being on TV just because of their looks, then I think you would be wise to reference the most blatant offender of this: FOX News.

Hi, sexist! Really, I think no one should do play-by-play for football! Also, I think we should make a law prohibiting football and all other sports. Sports are an irritating event in soooooooooooooo many ways (like backed up traffic).

Curt, you must have been watching the Michigan/Indiana game! I told the Missus that they really had the C Team or D Team out for that game and that it didn't matter much -- if it wasn't the lady calling the game, the man calling it wouldn't have been any better. That's when she said, "I wasn't sure if that was a man or a woman calling the game." | | The Following User Says Thank You to Marrow Man For This Useful Post: | |

Is the purpose of this thread to determine the real complimentarians from the egalitarians?

| I can't think of a specific person off the top of my head, but I was fairly appalled by the questions the sideline interviewer asked the Tennessee and Florida coaches last week. They had much more to do with the trash-talking that had gone on before the game and little to do with how the game was being played. This is usually my beef with the sideline interviewers - they tend to focus more on the "gossip" and less on the game. To be honest though, I'm constantly frustrated with the commentators. My favorite comment of all time: "Well, at this point in the game, Nebraska just really needs to score." Thanks for that insight. Really.
And I completely agree re: Fox News.

I guess I won't say that it is sexist, but it definitely is an issue based purely on your (and others, sometimes even mine) preferences. There is nothing inherent in the play-by-play that requires a male to make the calls, though it is what we are used to, so I understand the preference. Also, it is easier to assume that a woman is clueless because she presumably never played football, but she could have watched lots of it!

Take down - such as when a law enforcement officer wrestles someone who is uncooperative to the ground.

It does kind of ruin a football game for me when a woman is doing the commentary. Women don't belong everywhere and one of the last places they appear to be at home is doing play-by-play or color commentary in a college football or NFL game. So -- sexist? Nah. But then, I grew up listening to Van Patrick and Ernie Harwell and George Kell and Budd Lynch and Bruce Martyn.
Tim, is that guy calling the Wolverines games supposed to sound kind of androgynous? Whatever; I don't like that, either.
A thought, though: if Suzy Kolber had never interviewed Joe Namath during that Jets game in 2003 in which he made a fool of himself, would he ever have sought treatment for his alcoholism? Just a rhetorical question.
