Any other bikers out there? I used to only bike but a car eventually became a necessity.
I bought a Trek 4500 in February and took it out for the first time today. I love it.

I took up mountain biking last year at the prodding of my brother. He gave me an older Gary Fisher Tassajara. He races singlespeed full rigid. There's a lot of good riding around here. It really puts your fitness to the test. But there is little better than a few hours climbing to the tops of mountains, bombing downhills, and then drinking a good brew.
I'm getting my kids into it too, and they're looking forward to joining me on the trails.

Because of my upcoming wedding, I probably won't lay out the cash this season but I enjoy riding and commuted to work a lot last spring and summer.

I bought bikes for my sons, then jumped on board myself. We spent much of the summer of '06 riding around Yosemite, Crater Lake, Bend Or and on horse trails in NW Washington. I miss doing it now. The old bike sits in the garage waiting for happy trails.
Mine is a Giant Warp.
The boys have Iguanas.

I used to ride a Peugeot PNE-12. (I got it when they first came out. That'll date me!) I was part of a redneck road racing team during high school and college. Now I have a cheapy mountain bike, but it gets me around. I really would like to get a good road bike again. It is rather popular around here.

I used to bike a lot and plan on getting back into it this year. I just bought a Gary Fisher Cobia, a mountain bike with 29" wheels it rides like a dream. Quote:

If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods near you they have a Diamondback 29" that's a little bit cheaper or you could look into a Cyclocross bike. That is a road bike with skinny dirt tires on it and if you need to you can change the handlebars to those of a mountain bike.

I ride a Cannondale R1000. I wish I lived in a city that was commuter friendly, if I were to bike to work I wouldn't make it longer than a week before being hit by a car.

Wow. A lot of mountain bikers. Any road bikers out there?
I took up cycling about 2 years ago. In the warm months, I try to ride a few days a week. I've done one major (what I call "major") cycling adventure, and that was the bike the Natchez Trace. Along with 3 friends (one of whom is on the PB) we started in Nashville, TN and 5 days/475 miles later we ended in Natchez, MS. The whole trip was self-supported, meaning we camped each night and carried all of our equipment on our bikes.
I've never done anything like that before, and I don't plan to again. Fun, but painful.
Here is my noble steed: Specialized S-Works E5

There are a lot of gravel roads where I live, with hills, which I love, and this bike is perfect for that environment.

That's great, Daniel. I have a Trek hybrid (can't remember the model number off the top of my head) that I used to ride every day to undergrad studies and back. It was both great fun and great exercise. It pours most of the year up in the Pacific NW, so it was decked out with a pair of nice reflective waterproof bags for books and clothing, a great halogen headlight, and some other fun gear.
I really liked that Trek, and even thought about taking it back out of storage just yesterday. I need to grow my legs and shrink my stomach back to their proper proportions!

I put around 10k miles on one of these:
Coolest bike I ever owned. Kept up with any road bike, (some triathalon racers used them because they were so easy to transport) and could fit into a Sampsonite suitcase.
Mine was a little different: it was geared for touring, so it had a 21 gear-inch low end and only a 48 gear-inch high end.
Still, I had it up to close to 60 mph going downhill and it was stable.
(BTW, it was a pedal bike, not a manual bike. |

That is a cool bike.
The fastest I have gone was 48MPH and that was with 25lbs of gear on my rear tire rack during the trip Tripel referred to. It was also pitch black out and I only had a flashing headlight; I was so tired of being on that bike I didn't care what could possibly happen if I crashed. Unfortunately it was just the first day of riding.

I ride a Sky Blue Trek Cruiser Classic to work every day. http://www.trekbikes.com/images/bike..._mensblack.jpg
I call it Shadowfax and everytime I mount up to go I say "Come Shadowfax show us the meaning of haste".

Any road bikers out there?
| I'm primarily a road rider, who made the switch after getting hooked on mountain bikes. I used to ride a lot a did some racing before kids but still do 60-100 a week during the summer. My primary bike is a Ridley Pegasus, I also have an Empella Bonfire cyclocross bike and a Gary Fisher MTB.
With spring in the air I'm itching to get out.
Unfortunately due to length and road conditions commuting is not really an option. Quote: |
They either are too expensive or don't fit. I am 6'3"

I have a nice bike that I want to ride to and from work, but I'm kind of afraid for two reasons: a) I don't like when my hair gets messed up from the wind or pressing helmet and b) I don't want to look like a Mormon. I may just walk instead... except that I'll still look like a Mormon! GAH! |
