An American classic, one of the countries most unheraled film makers is director Michael Curtiz seeming we all know his movies but nothing of him, Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Seahawk.

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.

...

Ugarte: You despise me, don't you?
Rick: If I gave you any thought I probably would.

Conffesion! I have never seen it. I know it is a classic...but it is like books you want to read or movies you want to see....sometims for different reasons you don't get around to them. I feel bad! I will ask my wife if she wants to watch it.

Believe it or not, my wife and I watched Casablanca for the first time, just a month ago. We're trying to work our way gradually through some of the classics that for some reason or another we never saw. Great flick!

Casablanca (1942), one of the greatest films of all time. And it was filmed on the fly, so to speak. The film was shot at the same time the script was being written. Ingrid Bergman once said that, if she looks confused through much of the film, it's because she didn't know which man her character was supposed to be in love with until they actually shot that final scene.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen that film.

1942 was a good year for director Michael Curtiz. That same year, he directed Yankee Doodle Dandy, starring James Cagney.

For movies in this vein, if you want to see another really good one, look for "The Search" (1948) with Montgomery Clift. It's vastly underrated. I've seen it 3 times and would happily sit through it again: The Search (1948) - Plot summary.

Powerful, great movie, showing Americans at their best...
