Vista Service Pack 1 - WILL NOT INSTALL!!!!

Okay, today was my 3rd attempt to install Vista Service Pack 1. I tried it a month or so ago, to no avail. It goes through all the updates, etc. then says, "Service Pack not Installed ... Reverting Changes"

This whole process wastes 2+ hours of computer working time.

Today was my third attempt. Same thing.

What gives?

Have you Google'd your PC make and model for driver issues with SP1? That is how I figured out that some of Dell's laptop audio drivers had a conflict with SP1.

Sorry for the long delay, I have been on the road

The problem is your computer has a piece of hardware that does not have SP1 supported driver. The windows update is designed to fail the install if the computer's hardware is not supported in SP1. I have known some people download the whole SP, 500mb, and install it, this way you defeat that feature of windows update and hope for the best. Professional advice - don't do it - the one person I know who did spent all weekend trying to get the update to work. He had to locate some third party driver, because the audio card manufacturer, that Dell used, had been bought out by another company, and the new company wasn't releasing a new driver for the hardware.

I can't get it to show up in Windows Update and for that reason have put off installing it several times. I have downloaded all of the other updates, even the optional ones, and it still won't show up. SP1 is a much bigger file (something like 4x or 5x bigger) if you download it directly from the site and they say there is more of a possibility that it could cause other problems with your system downloading it that way too.

MS had given me a hotfix to download when I was having a lot of problems with my system crashing a few months ago, so maybe that could be a reason why SP1 won't show in Windows Update. IIRC the MS rep told me that the hotfix was part of the upcoming SP1.

How long do y'all think it would take (on average) for companies to update their drivers after an SP has been released?

If the company is still going to support the hardware, 3 months. 6 months tops.
