What do I do to figure out what has happened?

Have you tried re-booting? Is this a notebook computer or desktop?

I just rebooted and it didn't solve anything. It's a notebook.

Do you have a way to eject the drive and then re-insert it to make sure it is seated properly. Notebook hardware failures are always a bit more problematic.

Does the drive have any power when you try to open it?

I'm not sure.
Yes. And the light is flashing. And when I first put a CD in, it makes the start up noise, etc. But nothing occurs. When I explore the system, the drive doesn't show.

XP or Vista?

Vista on Toshiba Satellite.

delete vista and install XP. Vista is the worst system I've ever seen!

Go to your Control Panel
Click on Device Manager

Are there any drives listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives?

Are there any devices in the list that have ? next to them or do you see anything there that might indicate your drive is there but the driver is messed up?

Not very useful advice if the problem is hardware related. I run Vista on 4 machines with no more or less problems than I had with XP.

Thanks, Rich. Between this post and the last I rebooted the computer a second time. Now it works.

Also, concerning Vista, I haven't had many problems at all with Vista.
