The Reformed vs Dispie tension in history

I enjoy reading more than discussing so am not asking for an argument but information mostly. If you'd rather not take time to answer and have a book to suggest on the subject that would also work well.

Two questions:

Can someone give a brief overview of the reform community, and where the different groups land in the overview - I know it will have to be generalities as there are all shades of people in any given group.

Second, in years past - maybe predating many of you, the dispies and the reformed veiwed one another as common warriors against liberalism. They all held to the fundamentals of the faith and they came from all sorts of denominations and groups. Since, the reform have decided the dispies are heretics and the the dispies shun the reformed.

Does anyone know why and/or when it happened?

I missed it totally, I started reading on a couple reform boards since the internet became popular and bingo there is no conversation between the two except heated :shocked2:

Not casting dagers either direction as I've seen both sides being obnoxious to one another

One example I remember is Carl McIntire, not saying he is typical of reform, but he was a Presb. as I recall - though an off group (which may have been why???)

I'm wondering if we gave up on beating the liberals and just started shooting each other

I'm not sure which reformed denominations you have in mind. The United Presbyterian church (PCUSA today) may be what you're refering too. There were some prominent Dispies in the late 1800's to early 1900's (like James H. Brooks). They hated liberalism for sure. Brooks worked side by side with Warfeild in combating liberalism. That's not to say that Warfield wasn't critical of dispensationalism, but they at least still preached the gospel and hated liberalism as much as the reformed guys. The break probably happened with the exiting of the reformed and fundamentalists from the PCUSA. When the OPC first formed, it was more an anti-liberal denomination. But when it was decided that they would be a Reformed denomination and adopted the WCF then the dispies left and formed the Bible Presbyterian Church. That's just one chapter in the dispie/reformed saga. I assume it was similar in other denominations too. Plus the arminians really latched on to dispensationalism and by the time the Fundamentals were written the arminians had really hijacked the fundamentalist movement, lowering the standards of Protestant doctrine. So, I guess you could put the break with the Dispies officially around the 1930-40's.

MacArthur's my favorite dispy! With books like [u:553273a1c6]The Gospel According to Jesus[/u:553273a1c6] and [u:553273a1c6]Faith Works: The Gospel According to the Apostles[/u:553273a1c6] even his own (dispies) are preturbed.
