I've always tried to reserve the word "heretic" for someone who teaches false doctrine on matters that are central to salvation. I would agree that Lindsay is way out there in eschatology, and that his teachings have had a detrimental effect, but not what I would call a heretic. But I don't know if I have the technically correct meaning of heretic there.

2. Hal has the same gift that John MacArthur has: the ability to sound convincing and absolutely authoritative, even if he were reading the telephone book. This means that differentiation between true and false, right and wrong, prophetic and pathetic get lost in the shuffle sometimes. The man is able to convince a crowd.
3. I pastored a church just a couple of miles from where he had his ministry back in the 80s/90s. The man is a celebrity in every sense of the term. At this point, he is famous for being famous, not for being right. This has allowed him to get away with manifestly wrong calendarizing, multiple marriages/divorces (3 or 4?), and a pretty "brusque" leadership style. His disparaging comments about Reformed theology are not much different from those of Tim LaHaye, another celebrity preacher. | Dennis, this is slightly off topic but maybe etexas won't mind. In your So Cal pastoring experience, did you ever have any dealings with Dr. Gene Scott?

Not personally. But, ministering in the Glendale (CA) area, you could not escape from him. The cigar chomping, cussing, showman with a PhD from Stanford, who helped start ORU, could be heard non-stop on local television. He would fill his ubiquitous white boards with Greek and Hebrew words, shout at the camera, cuss at the congregation, raise $1 million/month, be photographed on horseback, celebrate exiting his limo with a bevy of barely clad beauties on his arms, etc. Eventually he married what one web source described as an ex-adult entertainment star back in 2000.
One of his obits referenced him as a "L.A.-based, whiskey-swilling, cowboy-hatted theologian who would growl about p***-poor Greek translations with a babe on each arm, has succumbed to a stroke at age 75." Another dubbed him the shock jock of televangelists.
Predictable was not in Scott's vocabulary. One writer noted: Quote:
Dr. Scott was for the war in Iraq. "Iraq is a threat to the world," he said in a 2003 speech posted on his website. "So kick the h*** out of 'em, George."
Recognizable by his mane of white hair and scruffy beard, Scott never stuck to a conventional format in his talk show. He sometimes smoked on the show and once wore glasses with eyes pasted on them.
Unlike other televangelists, Scott's sermons did not condemn homosexuality, abortion or other hot-topic sexual issues. He argued such issues were a personal choice.
| Ken, why in the world would you ask about him?

Honestly, the guy facinated me. Watching him on TV was like watching a car chase on the news. You can't look away no matter how much you want to. Have you seen his widow preaching on tv with her collar?
