| Relationship of Authority and Caring
Grounded with a nasty headache yesterday, I got to thinking about the relationship between authority and caring: Rightly established, God gives authority to those who are also commanded to care for those under them. Think of a mama with her little ones caring for them and exercising gentle authority over them -- same with a husband to his wife and a pastor and elders to their church.
My thinking broke down a bit when it came to civil authority -- you can rightfully have "protection" from the civil authority, from evil doers and outside powers. But we've all seen what a disaster it can be when the gov't decides it needs to care for you like a nanny. Perhaps this shows a limit to authority, especially when one authority (like the state) begins to encroach on the responsibility of others (like the family or church). Or was the "divine protection" of the king based on a Biblical model?
