J. Gresham Machen on the Basis of Morality

From Page 126 of "What is Faith?":

Quote:
...The truth is that decency cannot be produced without principle. It is useless to try to keep back the raging sea of passion with the flimsy mud-embankments of an appeal to experience. Instead, there will have to be recourse again, despite the props afforded by the materialistic paternalism of the modern State, to the stern, solid masonry of the Law of God. An authority which is man-made can never secure the reverence of man; society can endure only if it is founded upon the rock of God's commands.
This is in the context of Machen's discussion on the failure of American Schools in the 1930's and the fallacious argument made by the State that rooting morality in "Patriotism" instead of God's Law would make "Better Americans".

I remember reading this point made several times in Machen's Education, Christianity, and the State. It was actually pretty annoying; since that book is a collection of Machen's essays, you see the exact same points made several times.

Apparently he didn't repeat it enough, given that some of his spiritual heirs today have forgotten or obscured this truth.
