Why did Calligraphic Illuminated Manuscripts evolved?

Was it because of the second commandment forbidden images that Calligraphic Illuminated Manuscripts came into being?

Sort of a picture made with words in a Artistic style?

Why did they die? Printing Press? Further Reading to the Second Commandment? Other?
