A. Begg sermons on the 4th commandment

Has anyone heard A. Begg's sermons on the 4th commandment and if so, what did you think?

I heard a sermon by Begg that was part of a series on the Sabbath 2 or 3 years ago, but I don't know if it's the same series you're thinking of. But I came away with the impression that Begg holds to the Puritan and Westminsterian view of the 4th Commandment, very rare these days for preachers with as large a radio ministry as his.

What stuck with me was his recounting of Stonewall Jackson's view of the sabbath. If anyone brought a "worldly" concern to Jackson's attention on the Lord's Day, Begg said that Jackson would respond with something like "we'll think about that tomorrow".

Beware of a religion without holdfasts. But if I get a grip upon a doctrine they call me a bigot. Let them do so. Bigotry is a hateful thing, and yet that which is now abused as bigotry is a great virtue, and greatly needed in these frivolous times. I have been inclined lately to start a new denomination, and call it "the Church of the Bigoted." Spurgeon

Chris,

Several years ago, his radio ministry aired two messages, I think, on the 4th commandment. I heard one of them and it was very good. I do not recall the Jackson story, but I agree with Jackson.

Did he have any say in the matter?

He probably justified it as a work of mercy by protecting life.

Perhaps he should have fought them IN the Sabbath.

For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. For they could not bear the command, "IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED." And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling." But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. Hebrews 12:18-24

"IN the Sabbath"? Are you referring to the rest some have entered and others are yet to enter (Heb. 3-4)? Or, is this a refernce to Christ?

I remember in one of his sermons Alistair said that everytime he preaches on the sabbath he gets letters from 7th Adventists. He then briefly made the case for the change of day to the first day, giving the same proof texts that the Shorter Catechism gives.
