Every pastor would profit from hearing Dever's questions and Linnes answers in this fascinating interview. I have never listened (willingly) to rap but I was very impressed with Shai Linnes theology, sobermindedness, sincerity and humility in this interview.

As may have said before me, "The media is the message," regardless of intention.

    Good interview.

I also highly recommend listening to every single one of the messages on the 9Marks website. They are incalculably helpful.

Could you elaborate? Is that a statement like Media=Message unconditionally? Or some lesser variation?

I think the idea is that the media necessarily shapes the message. In other words, the medium is not neutral. For example in our current digital/computer/internet culture not only shapes the message, but it also has an effect on those who receive the message. Information is reduced to soundbites and if it doesn't contain some visual component to stimulate our eyes, the message is ignored. In general, our children don't read as much as we did as kids (and we didn't as much as our parents, etc.).

Starting about 25 mins into the interview, Shai gets a tad too relativistic in his defense of Christian "rap" and doesn't seem to understand the role musical style has on emotion and its ability or lack thereof to convey the message.

    TRUECONVERT...
this is an argument you will never win.
it is my experience that when people think that thier opinion is God's opinion
you can never get them to agree with you.
there are some people who cannot support thier stance scripturally, (resort to non scripture resources or clever statements not found in the bible ) and will argue and dig. just let it go.
love your weaker brethren and enjoy the music that he has blessed brother Shai with. (btw... i hate rap music, but love the atonement cd)

LOL! I see your point. I digress, respectfully.
Yes! The Atonement CD is MEATY. There is a song called "High Priest" from shai's CD "Stories" that's phenomenal as well. Just a heads up. lol

yea.. i have stories as well. and i love it when we are all in the car and my kids and i are singing the songs together
my favorite on that cd is "as the hour draws near" very moving peice of music. if you want an interesting study some time, look up the word "Shigionoth" in Hab 3:1
i played lead guitar for nearly 13 years in a well established black gospel group
i have seen and heard it all! but the thing i learned is that God is truly multicultural. His desire is that all these cultures worship Him in Spirit and truth. can you imagine how awesome that will be in heaven?

Indeed! That's gonna be amazing! It's already interesting when I put my mix of Selah, Shai Linne, Christcentric, Shane and Shane, and Sovereign Grace music on shuffle LOL. It's gonna be an amazing time for believers of every ethnicity to worship the Sovereign Lord together!!
