    Jo Stafford (1917-2008)

Singer Jo Stafford died the other day, aged 90. She was probably the last of the major singers from the big band era. Her career lasted from 1939 to 1966, when she voluntarily semi-retired at the age of only 49. She was a major star in her day. Her recording of "You Belong to Me" (1952) sold over 2,000,000 copies and was #1 on the Billboard pop chart for 12 consecutive weeks.

Here she is with another legend, Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996), from 1961:

The gospel would be better understood if the fact of universal sinfulness were more deeply felt. - Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910), commenting on Romans 3:19-26.

You are so right. It brings a tear to your eye. I remember my Dad putting Jo Stafford records on the old stero console record changer.

Wonderful song. I didn't hear much of this kind of music when I was growing up but it does remind me of the world I once lived in. It was a kinder, gentler world. I miss it, but there's a better world coming.
