Thread: Favorite Beatles Song

They have been running a ton of Beatles related stuff on VH1 Classic lately (the Concert For George is on right now) and it has had me breaking out my parents records and listening to their whole corpus. (Music sounds better on records). And after listening I think this is my favorite, though I am sure that will change.

Ha! That's so funny, I thought I'd check out the Puritan Board while I blast some Beatles music tonight and lo and behold, this thread. I'm a huge Beatles fan (my hippie pre-school teacher taught us Yellow Submarine and All Together Now on our "magic" carpet and I've been hooked ever since). And yes, I've been totally geeking out while watching VH1 and their replay of the Anthology series. I haven't seen it since it first aired back in the 90s! I'm glad no one can see me dancing while they play their songs. I'm almost tempted to pull out my A Hard Day Night DVD..almost.

All that to say that my favorite Beatle's song is I Will. So simple, yet so heartfelt.

I don't know the name, but it goes a bit like this:

Hey, hey we're the beatles, people say we ...something, something around..

Anyone know which song that is.

Try the Monkees

"I Will" is also one of my favorite Beatles songs. Sometimes I wish it had another 2 or 3 verses. But, actually, it's perfect just the way it is. Short and sweet - but heartfelt and straightforward.

Wonderful.

Day in The Life.

To think that I actually saw them perform live at Olympia Stadium in Detroit in August, 1964, with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" being the first song (if I remember correctly; the pre-eminent sounds were the screams - )... My friends and I sat in the 10th row on the coveted "Paul side" of the arena. It was the first rock concert I was allowed to go to w/o parents along... A friend's dad stood for about 6 hours in line just to get us the tickets, which cost $10 apiece. We were all 14 at the time and we had the time of our lives. We all swore we'd each made eye contact with Paul McCartney at some point during the concert...

I was just really trying to make eye contact with George Harrison, though.

Forty-five years has gone awfully fast.

From Detroit, and staying in the Midwest, the Beatles went on to the Indiana State Fair, where, on Sept. 3, 1964, they performed one of my favorite Beatles songs, "Things We Said Today" and went into the beginning of "Roll Over, Beethoven:"

Musically, I think Blackbird, In My Life, Here Comes the Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps (the acoustic version) would have to be at the top of my list, though I'm sure I've left out some that are "more favorite."

Great selections already. I won't do the links right now, but let's not overlook a few of their more widely known:

1. Norwegian Wood, which I love for its spare sound, for George's sitar, and as short story.
2. Eleanor Rigby. All the lonely people. Evocative images in a few words, accompanied by lovely strings. I will not vouch for Paul's post-Beatles career (Silly Love Songs ... really?) but this was among his best.
3. Their early cover of Twist and Shout, which caused one of my rare disagreements with Dave Barry. It really is better than the Isley Bros'.

Now, I'm sorry to have to say this, but the above confusion of the Beatles with ... gasp ... cough ... can't hardly make my fingers type it ... the Monkees ... is sort of like saying there's no difference between succulent, fresh-picked grapes, and grape soda. Or between a friend's glorious home brew, and Bud Lite. Please don't do this to me again, I beg you.

Also love the "nod to doo-wop" that Paul and George make in an instrumental riff in this song! I never heard that before watching this video.

Seriously. I may be small but I'm scary when I'm mean. I'm choosing to believe gene_mingo was being facetious. I have a hard time recognizing that, much to my friends' amusement. The Monkees, while an ok band in their own right, should never ever be confused with the Beatles. Never ever!

I wish some "public servants" would heed that timeless quote.

I won't follow or listen to anybody that thinks "Hey, we're more popular than Jesus." And plus I always thought they were overrated anyways.

I'm happy to be corrected but I thought the quote was not so much an indictment of Christ but an indictment of the world wherein a band would be more popular than the Savior. Now, I know John Lennon (he said it, right?) wasn't necessarily lamenting the low state of Christianity (from his perspective) but I do believe he meant it as something of an indictment.

You are correct:



John Lennon was no Christian, as far as we know, and neither was George Harrison. We don't know the ultimate profession yet of the surviving Beatles. Lennon sang "I'm a Loser" aptly.

These people are certainly nothing to be emulated; the personal lives of all of them are/were appalling.

I'm a Sargent Peppers man myself. Like them all especially 'She's Leaving Home' and 'When I'm 64.' When I heard the latter 64 was a long way of, now its just over 12 years away.

Also like Hey Jude, Here Comes the Sun, Yellow Submarine in fact quite a few more that I can't really decide on an actual favourite.

People who started listening to the Beatles in 1962 at the age of 15 would have heard the song I Want to Hold Your Hand.T
Seven years later they would have heard the song, Why Don't We Do It In the Road?

Their drug fueled lifestyle caused me and many others to try Yoga, Tran-Med and a "Hippy" life style. Thankfully God called me out of that life quickly.

Yellow Submarine. Because it is so ridiculously stupid. And who cares about most of the lyrics? It's funnest just to scream "WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE, YELLOW SUBMARINE, YELLOW SUBMARINE" in a goofy voice over and over and OVER.

I've never done that myself, but a friend did. I wanted to hurt him.
