| | | New (Old) Books Purchased Today
One of the blessings of the pastorate is the annual renewal of the Library Fund every January 1st. So I got me down to ye olde Cumberland Valley Bible Bookstore and picked up:
"Lex Rex" by Rutherford. I'm presently going through his "Trials and Triumphs of Faith". But I'm of the understanding that this is his most influential work.
"Samuel Rutherford" (biography) by Rendell
"A Beam of Divine Glory" by Pearse
"Covenant Theology" by Golding. Can't learn too much about this topic. I also want to compare him to O. Palmer Robertson
"Principles of Conduct" by Murray
"Covenantal Worship" by Gore
"Stories of the Covenanters in Scotland"
"The Valley of Vision." A wonderful prayerbook.
"The Crown & Covenant Set" - a 3-vol. of novels for the younger set, but it has this old sinner interested.
Any comments?

See the review of Gore's Covenantal Worship, and his Ph.D. thesis from which it stems, in The Confessional Presbyterian vol 1 (2005), available at http://www.cpjournal.com

"The Valley of Vision." A wonderful prayerbook. | This is an excellent work, and it is one of the four books that I always have on hand for study, the others being the Holy Scriptures, the Westminster Standards, and the OPC's BCO (pathetic, I know). It has rejuvinated my soul on many a day when the academics of seminary have otherwise dried it up beyond recogition. Those men really knew how to compose a prayer, and that in the best sense of the word.

| That is quite a commendation. I will add this to my reading list. Lex Rex is indeed a classic in Reformed literature. It is not light reading, but if one is interested in learning about the Biblical view of civil government and the relationship between magistrates and citizens, it is essential reading. Principles of Conduct is a classic too, and highly recommended, as is Valley of Vision.
Covenanter stories are good for young and old. For Christ's Crown & Covenant!
