Mariner's Church in Detroit was originally founded by members of the Episcopal Church and Presbyterian Church in 1842. It was to be a ministry to seaman. It was to always be pastored by an Episcopal cleric but was governed by a self perpetuating board of trustees. In the latter half of the 20th Century Mariners Church had become a sacramental liturgical church with a very high church character.

After the Episcopal Church began believing little and started ordaining women the board of trustees and her rector, the Rev. Richard Ingalls broke fellowship with the Episcopal Bishop.

This spring Richard Ingalls was consecrated a Bishop not of a diocese but of his congregation, Mariners Church. On the Church website at:

the Rt. Rev. Richard Ingalls says "In the New Testament each house church-congregation had its own bishop-overseer. He was the chief pastor of his flock...."

It would seem that Fr. Ingalls view of Church polity is now the same as our congregational brothers except he believes in apostolic succession.
