Finished reading Ladd.....

In his intro. he states the correct method if interpreting Revelation is a blending of the preterist and the futurist methods. OK, fair enough...this is a subject in which I am seeking to find where I stand, the commentary starts strong the writting is good and cohesisve. About half through...it becomes less so. I was realy dissapointed. Few things are worse in my mind than books..whether a novel or commentary or whatever...begins to "fray" at some point. For those who wonder...no...I cannot put my finger exactly on the point where Ladd seems to lose some focus. It was gradual I suppose. In any event I am very open to two things...imput on wheter it was just me or wheter anyone else had this experience with Ladd, and maybe some stuff that is a little better, it does not have to take Ladd's approach. His overall theology books are better than his commentary, I think.

Yes, I i note he has some other books on this subject......is there one you might recommend?

His Theology of the New Testament, especially the part about "Kingdom." This book is standard reading regardless of eschatological positions.

I was one of Ladd's students during his final years of teaching. At that point, his mind had begun to "fray" as you say and he was noted for losing his focus. Several reviewers have commented on his Revelation commentary as not living up to the genius of the man. I can remember him dismissing class because he had mistakenly prepped for the the lecture he had just given the previous day! Yikes! One day he almost slid off his stool in the front of the class. During this time he also wept openly at the mental (?)affliction of his adult son. He could not reconcile it with Romans 8:28.

This is sad. If this commentary was written during this time it might explain a bit about....the fact it becomes a bit cloudy.

I should add that a few years earlier, Ladd was all of the Harvard PhD. He was brilliant and incisive. And, few evangelicals had the cache with the academic establishment grudgingly accorded to Ladd by the left.
