| | | Can anyone recommend a good commentary on Ruth
I'm finishing up Jonah this Sunday and I've already started building my Ruth library...but you can never have too many good books
Any suggestions?
I should have put this under OT History...sorry.

I will recommend my old Studies in Ruth posted at my website. I will have to update those one of these days, but in the meantime, there are some nice charts included.

Block's excellent if technical commentary on Judges includes Ruth as well.

Hubbard (NICOT) is essential, as is Campbell (AB). Ferguson has a great new little book on Ruth, entitled _Faithful God_. Also worth considering are Bush (WBC), Atkinson (BST), Lawson Younger (NIVAC, bound with Judges), Nielson (OTL), and Sakenfeld (Int). Further down the list are Morris (Tyn, only because it's so brief), Famer (NIB), and Jackman (MOT). That should give you enough to go on.

Ruth generally does not have great commentaries, but that is balanced by the fact that the Hebrew is relatively easy, and that the narrative is readily accessible.
Duguid is the best for pastoral application. Block is helpful, and Hubbard can have good material, although he can bore you to tears with critical stuff as well.

Here's a commentary on Ruth: she dressed somewhat conservatively, was a little on the tall side, and didn't look bad in heels. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
