Tears have a voice
(Thomas Brooks, "The Crown and Glory of Christianity,
or, HOLINESS, the Only Way to Happiness", 1662)
"The Lord has heard the voice of my weeping."
Psalm 6:8
Tears have a voice. God has an eye as well upon
a man's tears—as upon his prayers. Penitent tears
are divine ambassadors, which never return from
the throne of grace without answers of grace. Peter
said nothing, but went out and wept bitterly—and
obtained mercy. Tears are a kind of silent prayers,
which will at last prevail for mercy.
"I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears."
Isaiah 38:5
A sinner's face never shines so beautiful, as
when it is bedewed with penitential tears.

| | | thomas brooks quote
Here's my favorite Brooks quote:
There are three things that earthly riches can never do; they can never satisfy divine justice, they can never pacify divine wrath, nor can they ever quiet a guilty conscience. And till these things are done man is undone. Thomas Brooks

There is a strange proneness in us to make our opinion and practice a rule and a law to every body else, to judge of all about us by our standard, and to conclude that because we do well all do wrong that do not just as we do. Matthew Henry

| | | one more from Brooks...
He who lives up to a little light shall have more light; he who lives up to a little knowledge shall have more knowledge; he who lives up to a little faith shall have more faith, and he who lives up to a little love shall have more love. Verily the main reason why men are such babes and shrubs in grace is because they do not live up their attainments. Thomas Brooks
