Meditate that hunger is like the sickness called a wolf; which, if thou dost not feed, will devour thee, and eat thee up; and that meat and drink are but as physic, or means which God hath ordained, to relieve and cure this natural infirmity and necessity of man. Use, therefore, to eat and to drink, rather to sustain and refresh the weakness of nature, than to satisfy the sensuality and delights of the flesh. Eat, therefore, to live, but live not to eat. There is no service so base, as for a man to be a slave to his belly; the apostle terms such, belly-gods 150 (Phil. iii. 19.) Therefore we may boldly term them, as the Scriptures do other idols, gillulim,4949Of galal, which signifies dung, as Ezek. iv. 15. dung-gods (Hab. ii. 18, 19; 2 Kings xv. 12.) And as no one action (God’s ordinances excepted) makes a man more to resemble a beast, than eating and drinking, so the abuse of eating and drinking to surfeiting and drunkenness, makes a man more vile than a beast.

Richard Baxter:
Quote:
Luxury and gluttony is a sin exceeding contrary to the love of God: it is idolatry: it hath the heart, which God should have; and therefore gluttons are commonly and well called belly-gods, and god-bellies, because that love, that care, that delight, that service and diligence which God should have is given by the glutton to his belly and his throat

Christian ritual costs nothing and is worth nothing. True Christian religion costs all that we have and is worth everything.

You're quite welcome.
I have struggled with gluttony myself, so these quotes were some that i found great encouragement in. I also found some Scriptures to be very helpful...

Ok thanks for the good quotes. I'm going to go to CCEL and browse through some of the documents using the 'quick find' button and I'm sure I'll get some good quotes on moderate eating. Though it's too bad that Andrew left the board, I bet we would have had at least twenty different quotes from the Puritans on moderate eating.
The man wants info about eating moderately, and you post a smiley that endlessly munches popcorn?

There are three kinds of people- those who can count, and those who can't.
That I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.
Philippians 3:8,9
