Thread: Joseph Caryl on Job 2.7-8

In my preparations to preach from Job 2.1-8 this coming sabbath, I ran across this gem from Joseph Caryl's "Practical Observations on Job" (volume 1 pp.267-268)

So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

When friends and physicians will not come near, when wife and children take their leave or stand afar off, when servants hold their noses , not being able to bear the stench and ill savor that cometh from the body, yea when a man comes to be an abhorring to himself, yet at that time God delights in him; Christ at that time embraceth him and takes him in his arms and kisses him with the kisses of his lips which are better than wine, yea better than life. Job was never so near God, so in the bosom of God, as when no creature in the world would so much as touch him: Job was never so beautiful in the eye of God as when he had nothing but boils upon him.

That is awesome. I wish I had seen that about 7 years ago.

Man i would really like to get my hands on that set on Job!

I imagine that this is how all of us look before God if considered apart from Christ.
