| Jerome on the interpretation of Scripture Jerome (347-420), while commenting upon the Epistle to the Galatians, stated: Therefore, whoever understands Scripture otherwise than as the sense of the Holy Spirit demands (by whom it is written), though he does not withdraw from the Church, can nevertheless be called a heretic, and he is choosing from among fleshly works those which are worse. Latin text: Quicumque igitur aliter Scripturam intelligit, quam sensus Spiritus sancti flagitat, quo conscripta est: licet de Ecclesia non recesserit, tamen haereticus appellari potest, et de carnis operibus est, eligens quae pejora sunt.
