Thumbs up Female Piety.. To Young Mothers

Female Piety: A Young Woman's Guide by John Angell James

"Cultivate, then, a trembling consciousness of your own insuffenciency, and cast yourselves by believing, constant, and fervant prayer upon God. Be in an eminent sense, praying mothers. Distrust yourselves; and by believing prayer, secure the aid of Omnipotence."

~later in the chapter....

"Young children must be sometimes contradicted in their wishes, but never merely for the purpose of teaching them submission by taking from them something they are pleased with."

These are from the chapter To Young Mothers.

Love... it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:6-7

Would someone tell the Pearls and Ezzo this...they believe you should try to trip up your child so you can "train them" like "Pavlov's dog".

I found this interesting (though not being a parent I want to tread with some care).

My first impression was that a certain level of "arbitrariness" in may actually be good in teaching a child discipline, i.e. training him or her to just sit still for x minutes, even if there is nothing to do while sitting there.

Once this discipline, or rule of his/her spirit, as the bible would call it, is taught, it can hopefully be applied in a wide variety of circumstances where discipline / self control is called for.

However, after a bit more consideration, I think what Mr James was warning against was purposely taking something away from a child (say a favored toy) simply to train them.

Am I getting the distinction?

What? You don't leave Mr. W's rifle on the coffee table so your kid can touch it, so you can spank them!? What kind of mother are you?

"Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, And all is darkened in the vale of tears, Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears. Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay From His own fullness all He takes away."

"Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray—
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee."
