Aquinas' quotes to stimulate further study...

Received in the mail today the newly translated and published work, Thomas Aquinas, Commentaries on St. Paul’s Epistles to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, trans. Chrysostom Baer, O. Praem. (South Bend: St. Augustine’s Press, 2007).

Thomas Aquinas says of Scripture while commenting on 2 Timothy 3:17: Its ultimate effect is that it leads men to perfection. For it does good not in whatever manner, but it perfects. Heb. 6:1: Let us go on to things more perfect. And so he says, That the man of God may be perfect, since a man cannot be perfect unless he is a man of God. For something is perfect which lacks nothing. Therefore, then is a man perfect when he is furnished, that is, prepared, to every good work, not only for those which are necessary for salvation but also for those which are of supererogation. Gal. 6:9: And in doing good, let us not fail. See Thomas Aquinas, Commentaries on St. Paul’s Epistles to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, trans. Chrysostom Baer, O. Praem. (South Bend: St. Augustine’s Press, 2007), p. 137.

Thomas Aquinas says of justification while commenting on 1 Timothy 1:6-14: But the Apostle seems to be speaking of moral precepts, since he adds that the Law was given because of sin, and so there are the moral precepts. And it is a legitimate use of these that a man not attribute to them more than is contained in them. The Law was given that sin might be known. Rom. 7:7: For I had not known concupiscience, if the law did not say: Thou shalt not covet, etc.: this is said in the Decalogue. Therefore, there is no hope of justification in them, but only in faith. Rom. 3:28: For we account a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law. See Thomas Aquinas, Commentaries on St. Paul’s Epistles to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, trans. Chrysostom Baer, O. Praem. (South Bend: St. Augustine’s Press, 2007), p. 12.
