The Wordy Shipmates

Has anyone read Sarah Vowell's The Wordy Shipmates (October 2008) about the New England Puritans? If so, thoughts?

I think that I shall never see a book less worthy of one tree?

Well, this is but I listened to part of the Focus on the Family Thanksgiving story and discovered...an Arminian "pilgrim"! The "pilgrim" assured poor Squanto that God had nothing to do with his tribe dying off and Squanto's being made a slave in England. The Squanto-character's interpretation had been that the Pilgrims' God was stronger than the natives' gods and was killing the natives off to make room for the Pilgrims - an interpretation that I'm sure some Pilgrims shared. I'm sure the Pilgrims were at pains to make sure the natives understood God's salvific purposes in what He did - the rescue of the Pilgrims and the salvation of some natives.

Was any name or historical citation given for this account? The colonists at Plimoth included both Pilgrims and "Strangers," ie., those who came not for religious reasons and did not always share the Calvinistic beliefs of the Pilgrims.

I didn't really listen too long - it was a character who was scouting and trying to reach the tribe living close by - with Squanto as guide.
