| | There is a brief review by Chuck Todd of The Founders Journal here.
I have it and refer to it from time to time; it is useful.

In the case of Waldron, recognizing that he is commenting on the LBCF, the differences between his and the WCF commentaries are to expected. Actually, on the subject of the civil magistrate, Waldron quotes Williamson in his argument that the LBCF is right to leave out WCF 23.3. Williamson's commentary is weak, imo, on that whole issue and certain others. Waldron is in agreement with Williamson and Hodge on the judicial laws of Moses in that they are no longer binding, but the moral law of God is. Where Williamson is particularly strong, ie., on the regulative principle and the Lord's Day, Waldron is also pretty strong (although he says the LBCF intends to distance itself from exclusive psalmody) and again quotes Williamson on the RPW. Waldron strongly affirms the 'free offer of the gospel' and 'common grace' (as does Hodge). Waldron provides helpful interaction with the WCF and other creeds, as well as modern errors such as non-literal attempts to explain the six days of creation, and modern authors. There is much to commend this book, and if you keep in mind that it is not a commentary on the WCF but the LBCF, it is pretty solid. | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to VirginiaHuguenot For This Useful Post: | |

| | | This is one of my favorite confessional commentaries. I do understand that it will vary (sometimes more, sometimes less) from the WCF because of its baptistic approach, but Waldron is an excellent writer, and he has the advantage of being a contemporary. His examples and discussions of issues on which the WCF and LBCF are the same (Creation, Justification, Election, Sabbath, etc) are very good. He is very well organized.
I agree more with Hodge's commentary, but I'd rather read 200 pages of Waldron than 3 of Hodge. After I read Hodge I have to reach for a glass of water. I think that is the difference between a 19th century author and a 20th (or even between a 19th century author and a 17th century author!).

| | | I agree with the comments in this thread. It is highly organized and for me, that makes it even more useful. I really like his position on the 10 Commandments/Moral Law issue.
Does anyone know of any comprable works on the LBCF? (Andrew)
