From the Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 462:

Quote:
Kirkton, James (1628-99), minister and historian. After holding charges at Lanark (1655-7) and at Mertoun in Berwickshire he was deprived in 1662 for nonconformity. He was offered an indulgence* at Carstairs in 1672, but refused to accept. In 1674 he was publicly denounced as a rebel, but apart from some minor brushes with the authorities he was able to avoid further persecution. Following the 1689 Revolution he ministered at the Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh, from 1691 to his death. His valuable Church History, though marred by an unsympathetic editor, gives insight into Church and state affairs at the Restoration* and after.
