Jonah Goldberg is an excellent writer and social commentator. He is also very funny. His National Review columns are always pretty good. I look forward to reading this book.

I'm almost finished with it. It is excellent. Basically, he shows that fascism is, historically, a political phenomenon of the Left, not the Right, but that the Left has been very successful, since the end of World War II, in propagandizing that fascism is a fruit of conservative politics. Goldberg uncovers the roots of the movement and shows just how liberal it really is, even today.

the problem is that the concept of fascism is itself contradictory in that the cleanest definition is that propounded in Italy in the 1920's, a model that was initially followed by the Nazi's but pretty much ended when the left wing of the Nazi party was suppresed in order to appease the industrialists and aristocrats.
What is now seen as fascism is actually a very different animal from the historical definiton, it gets even worse now that the term is just of a perjorative value.
While fascism has its roots in socialism it is a socialism where the state not the people are the highest ideal, it is actually a very religious concept with a very man made and non personal deity.
