| | | First English Metrical Psalms
The first Englishman to translate select psalms into English meter was my ancestor, Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder, who versified the six penitential psalms around 1540, later published in 1594 under the title Certain Psalms. They can be read here: The Poetical Works of Sir Thomas ... - Google Book Search

Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder and Younger were both remarkable men in a remarkable time in English history. They had their weaknesses as well as strengths. I find the metrical psalmody facet of Wyatt's poetic efforts to be quite fascinating both historically and for personal reasons.
