Review and summary of Schaeffer's new book from a feminist. I think this show what to expect from the religious left, who will use this book as propoganda.

What a depressing tarring of Francis Schaeffer's character. I can remember eagerly snatching up his books in the late 60s and standing by him when my college professors (Westmont) ridiculed him as a philosophical ignoramus with a simplistically reductionistic and incorrect comprehension of philosophy. Attending one of those video rollouts of "Whatever Happened to the Human Race" in 1978, Frank (or Frankie as he was then called) struck me as an angry and arrogant person who was speaking words that seemed oddly incongruent with his demeanor.

Is not the problem that we do not allow room for the Fall to really affect the lives of Christian leaders? There is discontinuity between my profession of faith and my thoughts, words and deeds on an hourly basis! I increasingly hate that fact and look forward to the day when my motivations / actions will be firmly rooted in love for God and neighbor.

I'm not shocked by what Frank describes went on in his household. I am shocked that he acts surprised he found sin there.

If I remember right, in the book The Tapestry, which is the Schaeffer's autobiography, Edith gives some glimpses into their "not-so-perfect" lives, however, it's been about 22 years since I read that book so my recollection may be off. Having said that, however, I think it shows great disrespect on Franky's part to share such things in public. I think it just shows where his heart is. The angry young man has perhaps become the bitter middle-aged man...

Having been brought up in a mix of fundamentalism (church and school) and a more-grace oriented approach (home), I can understand the frustrations of Frank Schaeffer. My legalistic pastor and teachers often drove me to anger, while my parents, more merciful (yet firm) encouraged me to live an honest life before God.

Reading Frank Schaeffer's angry comments frightens me as a parent. When I think of Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." (ESV) It sends a chill up my spine. How many times have I disciplined my children in such a way that they were provoked to anger? More than I would like to admit. As much as I respect the Schaeffers, it is most likely that this is what happened with Frank. We all do it to some degree with our children.

I can understand that Franky would be mad at pop evangelicalism back in 1978. I can't imagine why this guy is still bitter and obsessed _thirty years later_.
