Books on the New Testament

Your task is to acquire the following books by category. You can only purchase one book in each category. Which ones would you choose?

New Testament commentary
Gospel commentary
Pauline epistles

Does New Testament Commentary=whole New Testament, Gospel=all four Gospels, and Pauline epistles=every Pauline epistle? And is one book equivalent to one "volume"?

Well, that's a tough one because of the precise parameters. Of Matthew Henry, in a 3-vol set, the NT would be one volume, so I would get that. If I could only have one book on the Gospels and it had to deal with all four, then hands down it would be The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim. And as far as a one-volume commentary on all the Pauline epistles, you'll have to wait for Andrew or Lane to see your post!

One set in each category would be easier. But one book!? That's not an easy question, but off-hand, I'd have to say:

Quote:
New Testament commentary
Matthew Poole's Commentary on the Whole Bible (Volume III: Matthew-Revelation).

Quote:
Gospel commentary
John Gill, Exposition of the Old & New Testaments (Volume 7: Matthew to John)

Quote:
Pauline epistles
Charles Hodge, Commentary on Romans

Sets are fine as they are one body of work.

Are you looking for the best exegetical commentaries or homiletic?

Exegetical. I'll handle the homiletics for future sermons.

Then, for what it is worth, my recommendations would be the following sets:

John Calvin
Hendriksen/Kistemaker, and
RCH Lenski.

1. New Testament commentary
2. Gospel commentary
3. Pauline epistles

1. Hendriksen/Kistemaker

2. Baker Exegetical Commentaries on Gospels (and you'll have the H/K as back-up for some theological issues. I think Carson says Bock's commentary on Luke is all you need in his NT commentary surevey, and this was the best way to get a (in a way) "set" in there. If I could pick individual ones, I'd probably make some different choices for Matt. (possibly Carson and Keener) and Mark. (probably Lane and A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary by Ben Witherington) and to a lesser extent John (probably Carson), though Kostenberger is a very good scholar).

3. 3 is too hard. I can't think of a "set" (remember, you already have H/K), I'd have to mix some from the the NICNT, the NIGTC, the BECNT, the PNTC, and some Puritans or older Reformers as well, plus some Socio-Rhetorical Commentary by Witherington (Erdmans). It's just impossible to do this justice with one book, or one set.

(I'd add that background knowledge helps in exegesis, and so some complemtary books for exegeting the Gospels would be F.F. Bruce's A New Testament History and Witherington's New Testament History: A Narrative Account)
