This was first said by the famous French poet Baudelaire in an unusual short story about meeting the Devil and having a grand old time.

The most popular reinterpretation of this quote (the one the title of this node is taken from) is in the 1995 movie The Usual Suspects, written by Christopher McQuarrie. In it, Verbal Kint explains the story of Keyser Söze to the cop:³

Since the quote was answered, I thought I might take the liberty of posting another query - one I have been trying to track down for years:

"History teaches us that history teaches us nothing at all"

I believe this was written by Hegel, but I only have it by hearsay. Anybody?

Thanks Benjamin,

Sadly, though, I can't find a direct quote in any of his works. If anyone comes across it, let me know.

Who was it that said something like "Even the best theologians can only be at most 80% right." Seriously, I've been trying to find out who said that ever since I heard a few years ago. Someone told me they thought it was Calvin, but they weren't completely sure.
