Sirius Satelitte Radio

Woo Hoo! This is my Father' Day present from my wife and daughter. Being a salesman I am on the road a lot. This will be a great blessing. The only problem with Sirius is Howard Stern, but that is a matter of just not listening to him.

Thanks Laurie and Bethany!

I got it for my last birthday.

The christian station isn't too great, at least from what I've heard.
There's some good music stations though. You're certain to find something that you like.

Be sure to check out the bluegrass station on Sunday mornings to hear the "Bluegrass Gospel Train" show.

Bill,

I have to ask you something. Did you look up all their talk radio stations? Sirius has a gay and lesbian talk channel. That was the main reason why I picked XM over Sirius (amongst some minor ones).

I know you meant well, and you should be commended for it.

Jason - I didn't pick Sirius. It was given to me. I also discovered that the receiver has a "block" on it. I can block unwanted channels. That doesn't condone Sirius' choice of programming but it does make those channels unavailble.

That makes sense. I didn't mean to sound harsh. It sounds to me from what you're saying that the homosexual channel uses some objectionable language on there. Am I right?

What is good about XM? I just bought a GPS that has an XM antenna so it can double as an XM receiver.

Fred, I wish I could answer your quote with regards to the GPS. What I have is an XM receiver where I can listen to over 160 channels of music and talk. It comes with the antenna, adapter that plugs into cigarette lighter, and tape adapter that goes into the cassette deck.

Now, if you want to try to listen to quality "Christian" teaching on Family Talk, good luck. Most of the theology presented is tepid at best -- with the exception of Alistair Begg and Albert Mohler. I usually ignore the rest.

But hey, Fred, they have Home Ice on there!!!

Jason,

What I am looking for is whether it would be worth the $12-15 per month for the XM subscription.

Hmmm. Not sure I can completely answer that one for you. You can go to their website at www.xmradio.com and see what their channel selection is. You name it, they pretty much have it. At least you're contemplating XM over Sirius. My wife even endorsed them on her online Christian newspaper (www.christwordtoday.com).

The neat thing about XM is that you could drive hundreds of miles in a day and not lose your signal -- unless, of course, you drive through a tunnel like the ones that are on the PA Turnpike or you are going through a deep ravine in Tennessee. That's why so many truckers have XM. It helps to pass the time. Not only that, but you can also listen to XM on your computer.

Here's another kicker. If you like to listen to classical music like I do, you sometimes have to listen to those annoying fund drives that come on quarterly from those state-owned PBS affiliates. With XM, you never have to worry about something like that. All the music channels are commercial-free. Plus, XM has a deal going on with DirecTV to play their music channels on your television. (Bear in mind, though, that the talk channels do have commercials on them.)

However, XM (and Sirius, for that matter) has the same stigma/problem attached to it that cable and satellite TV has: no one can get a la carte programming...yet. I've been looking forward to that day, because I am so disgusted with my dollars keeping networks like MTV and Air America on the air. In my view, that's legalized racketeering.

Like I said, if you take a look at Family Talk on XM, you may find yourself shunning a great majority of the programming.
