Science Fiction - For Rich Leino

Rich:

Last Saturday (July 7) was the centenary of the birth of the science-fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988).

Did you know that one of his two most famous novels, Starship Troopers (1959) has been, at one time or another, required reading at all three service academies? (His other most famous novel is Strangers in a Strange Land [1961].)

Also, did you know that Heinlein gave the James V. Forrestal Graduation Lecture at Annapolis in 1973? (I've tried to find the text online, with no luck.)

He had some odd personal views (he was a nudist and an atheist, among other things) but he was a committed libertarian for most of his adult life - and apparently has been much appreciated by the military. He even has a ship named for him, I believe.

Just thought this might be interesting to you...

OK. It's interesting that he was a nudist.

I've never read the book but the movie fashions the infantry guys after U.S. Marines with many of their sayings. Also, the Blizzard game Starcraft lifts ideas from his book with the Terrans and the Zerg. I wasn't aware it was required reading at the academies.

One other factoid is that the lead character Johnny Rico's native language is Tagalog. I think it's the world language in Heinlein's future.
