Why not another Gunpowder Plot?
[edited to add a smiley, indicating the not-seriousness of this post]

Things I like about Guy Fawkes Night:
1. Watching the movie "V for Vendetta" (Cool movie except for the pro-homosexual theme.)
2. Great night for a bonfire.
3. Remembering that Guy Fawkes was the only men to enter Parliament with honest intentions.
4. The coolest mask ever.
6. An excuse to rip on a Pope.
A penny loaf to feed the Pope
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A fagot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
Hip hip hoorah!
Hip hip hoorah hoorah!
7. A opportunity to use the word 'fagot' without having the hate crime police drag you before the magistrates. (No guarantees though.)

Yes, except for the homo scenes, it was a great movie. Too bad the herd really doesn't act according to principle in real life.

| Meaning no disrespect, and with all due regard to the non-seriousness of the list -
to a historically-minded Brit this idea is not as funny as all that (a bit like humorously commending the intentions of those targeting American government on 9/11?)

9/11 didn't target American government Jenny so no offense is taken. Now if you would wish to suggest a Guy Fawkes type was to put 'Three-score barrels of powder below' the congressional chamber, in the spirit of the day and with a wink I would enjoy a guilty pleasure at the mental image.
As Guy Fawkes day has evolved one can celebrate by burning either the King, the Pope or Mr. Fawkes himself in effigy, so everyone is happy.

Britain was never closer, within a whisker really, of seeing the Reformation undone and Catholicism once more triumphant. hence the heartfelt celebrations, the reason for which was still pretty widely understood into my own lifetime.
No-one ever burnt the King in effigy.
Everyone was crystal clear: they burnt the Pope in some places (I'm told they actually still do so in Lewes in Sussex) but all over the country they burned Guy Fawkes who had tried to reinstate his supremacy.
(hope you've got all that down )

There are many things that I don't take seriously enough Jenny so I apologize for making light of and being flippant over what is a serious matter. Thank you for your input on the topic.

Thank you for your input on the topic. | That's ok Bob I knew you were kidding even though I do think it's serious - it would be easier to take it lightly over here, if the rights and wrongs of the story weren't getting so blurred, and Rome being more and more confused with the true church in people's minds. No need for apology though | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
