    Queen Victoria Factoid

Remember that very elderly woman who died earlier this year who was the last survivor of the Titanic - that, with her death, that sinking was no longer within living memory and belonged now entirely to history?

    I can top that.

When the Englishman Henry Allingham died in July 18, at age 113, not only was he one of Britain's last two World War I survivors, but, with his death, Queen Victoria's funeral (1901) is now no longer within living memory.

Another useless (but sort of interesting) factoid, brought to you free of charge...

The gospel would be better understood if the fact of universal sinfulness were more deeply felt. - Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910), commenting on Romans 3:19-26.

It's amazing for me to think that probably within my own lifetime, WWII will cease to be within living memory. One of the highlights of my trip to England years ago was spending about an hour talking with a man who was with the RAF. He had flown many missions fighting Germans in the air. It was absolutely fascinating.

Good, I'll put it on my card!

On the news this morning the other surviving WWI veteran, Harry Patch, died at a nursing home earlier today in Wells, SW England. He was 111.

I was trying to think of Mr Patch's name, thinking he might have been (just) old enough to remember Queen Victoria's funeral. Sad to hear he too has died

So now, there is one guy in Australia (who's 108) and one guy here in the USA. They're the only two left.
