Marriage by a Justice of the Peace?

I see nothing in scripture or in the Westminster Confession that forbids marriage by a Justice of the Peace. Is there anything wrong with marriage by a JP?

Saving faith is an immediate relation to Christ, accepting, receiving, resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of God's grace.

Go for it! Save a buck. Marriage is not a sacrament.

In the Reformation era marriage forms- the liturgy is usually referred to 'solemnization of marriage'. The marriage, at least in the Dutch tradition, was done at the magistrate and then 'blessed' at the church. Marriage belongs to all men.

I did it four years ago. Marriage has been great!

I never really thought to ask until today. If there was an issue I was going to need to make an appointment with my pastor.

In the OT all you had to do was give a couple old guys one of your shoes.

    There you go!

Why do we have to make things so complicated?

The American Puritans, to my knowledge, preferred marriage by civil authorities over marriage by clergy, arguing that it was more Biblical. I don't remember where I read that.

Let us, then, as we would show ourselves to be godly, keep close to the rule of worship, and in the things of Jehovah go no further than we can say, 'It is written'.

The pilgrims picked this up in Holland, as a matter of fact. I have a paper discussing the history of the marriage license that touches on this topic. PM me if you're interested in a copy.
