| | | I Want to Hear From Some Texans
The question: is Texas part of the South, or part of the West?
I've never thought of Texas as being part of the South, but as being part of the West. Must be all those cowboy movies...
OK, Texans: what say ye?

Texas is itself. Period. We're big enough, and the only State to have been its own country!

I lived in Texas years ago. It's so big that people in the east consider themselves Southerners and people in the Northwest think of themselves as Westerners. And the rest don't care.

OK, Texans: what say ye? | Texas is part of Mexico..don't you guys know your History. (Joking)
By the way most cowboy movies were made in California not Texas.
Seriously,
I will agreed with Fred, Texas is a state on its own...Texas is Texas and I will say, "Don't mess with Texas."

I think Vic has the right of it: those in east Texas tend to identify with the South, while those in west and north Texas tend to identify with the Southwest, while those in the southern part of the state do not identify with either region.

I was a Texan for 20 yrs. We were Texans. If a choice is given between South or West, it had to be south. Because them yankee's were northerners. We were Southern. There it is.

From a former Texan, there are several other states which claimed nation status or acted as nations before becoming states: Kingdom of Hawaii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia California Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Vermont Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
More could be said about Rhode Island, North Carolina, and indeed all thirteen original colonies under the Articles of Confederation.

East Texas is more like the South, especially rural E. TX (i.e. outside of the Dallas and Houston metros.) West Texas is more like the West or Southwest.

Texas was one of the Confederate States of America, and so associated with the old south.
Anything west of Dallas has true western tradition, not unlike New Mexico and Arizona.

East-Texas is considered more Southern in terms of culture. Once you move West of the Dallas area it becomes more "Western" in History and culture.

"West of Dallas" is the truth. Its called DFW Metro area, but there is a distinct difference between Dallas and Fort Worth. It's kinda weird; even the dirt changes from black to red.

Yup, lived in Cowtown for about three and a half years. There is a difference between the two cities. Interesting part of the country. Very vibrant and alive. And, man, was it hot!!
