| | | Another technical household question...
Taking my cue from Augusta, who got some good help out of her gas dryer thread — how does one remove debris from an electrical socket? :/ I know . . . I don't even have kids, and I promise my kitchen isn't that messy, but somehow something gooey got on the end of the last plug I used in this socket, and it's kind of stuck just inside the hole. I know metal utensils are out, and fingers are a no-no. Is it possible to fix?

a plastic toothpick comes to mind...
but if you haven't got one of those, I'd probably be tempted to take the socket apart after throwing the breaker that supplies the circuit the outlet is on.

maybe turn off the power and replace the entire socket, they aren't that expensive and not that difficult to replace.

Okay. Landlord's out of town and he has the only access to the fuse box, but we have other sockets available in the meantime. Thanks.

They cost about 50 cents to replace, but if it still works the stickiness won't hurt anything.

I have a degree in Electronics. I personally wouldn't advise anyone to mess with an outlet unless the power was off. It most likely wouldn't hurt you unless you were wet or something but it will give you a jolt.
After the power is off, then you could proceed with cleaning out what ever needs to be removed. I have a scar on my right thumb where electricity blew a hole out of my hand. I got sweaty working on something and I accidentally touched the black wire evidently. I grounded right out. And I was stuck to the source. It was no fun and I felt a little funny for a day. | | The Following User Says Thank You to PuritanCovenanter For This Useful Post: | |

I had an English teacher who was struck by lightning years before I had her, and she had a hole in her thumb and toe where the bolt entered and exited.
