    Aaron Burr

While listening to an audiobook on Andrew Jackson this morning I learned that Aaron Burr was the grandson of Jonathan Edwards.

I thought to myself.... "I did not know that".

I just visited his grave in September before I left my home town in Princeton for North Carolina.

Aaron Burr is buried right next to his grandfather.

Aaron Burr Jr. is burried in Princeton Cemetary, but is he in the Presidential lot? I can't remember. I thought he was. I know he was not a president of the seminary, but his father was.

    Thumbs up

I had a history teacher in H.S. That was interested in Tombstone Rubbings: Going out to Cemetary's getting info in particular stone markers. Regular Joes, Marys, whatnot.

Would it be nice to rub off a few of these ?

Marsden in his great bio on Edwards has some helpful info on the erratic Mr. Burr, who also famously shot Hamilton dead in a duel, then hatched a harebrained scheme to rule over Texas.

Burr lost both his parents and grandparents (Jonathan and Sarah) before the age of two, if memory serves. Not trying to psychologize his later life, but it certainly is a sad beginning for any child. Edwards went to succeed the late Aaron Burr, Sr., his son-in-law, as president of Princeton. Before Sarah could join him in Princeton, he got inoculated against smallpox, developed the disease and died on March 22, aged 54.

Sarah wrote daughter Esther Burr a moving letter on God's providence after learning of Jonathan's death. Esther never received it, but was seized by a delirious fever, and died less than two weeks after her father.

Sarah Edwards died at age 48 on October 2

Apparently this is a subject still debated among historians. In the Wikipedia article I linked above, it contains this quote by Burr (upon witness the new Republic of Texas)....

"What was treason in me thirty years ago, is patriotism now."
