| | | Hurrah, now all four Calvinist ABC-USA ministers are on Puritan Board!
Yes, I pastor a church that is affiliated with a largely Arminian, Finneyistic, liberal denomination (although really not much more liberal than the RCA is at large). Yet, my church is biblically solid and (I pray, increasingly under my ministry) confessional and devoted to the doctrines of grace.
God bless you all and to him be all glory, honor, and praise!

Welcome Zach! I spent more than 50 years in the ABC (ordained in '78), served on numerous national committees and task forces, am CEO of an ABC related retirement community, and was part of the region that withrew 3 years ago (PSW, now Transformation Ministries).
You are a better man than I am. In SoCal, we just couldn't take the AWAB domination of national life and the lack of biblical convictions by top leadership in VF any longer. God bless you.

It seems that those who are considered remnants are attracted to the PB. If we keep adding to all the other remnants, though, will there come a point when the remnant is no longer a remnant?
Welcome by the way, and you can ignore my inane question.

THANK YOU, all for the warm welcome. I often feel quite alone as a Reformation-minded minister with a proper understanding of Law and Gospel, an eschatology that wasn't cooked up since the Civil War, and a confessional understanding of the faith.
My colleagues seem to be mostly divided into ultra-liberals and political conservatives who have "bought the kit" and are emulating Saddleback or Willow Creek. It's hard to be involved in clergy groups, etc., considering that I disagree with the presuppositions behind almost every "church growth strategy" and new "relevant" fad.
So, anyway, I'm glad you're all here.

Well, this thread is encouraging!
We've been attending an American Baptist Church here in Fayette County, Pennsylvania for 6 years (we moved here from Lancaster Co 7 years ago).
I'm a Deacon (have been for a while) and teach the Adult Sunday School class.
After living in the buckle of the Bible belt (16 years), it has been quite shocking to see how empty a region can be.

Most of the ABC churches in Michigan are more like the latter. I'm not familiar with ABC-PA. But what matters most to me is whether the Gospel is being proclaimed faithfully and the sacraments administered properly.
Heck, we just brought our youth group up north to Sault Sainte Marie for a mission trip with several other churches, and they didn't hear anything about the sovereignty of God until one night when we joined a WESLYAN church for their youth group service, which included a 1/2 hour sermon. Miracles do happen.

I'm a graduate of the very Wesleyan Houghton College -- if you didn't attend Houghton Wesleyan Church, you had a drive to any alternative!
But at Houghton I learned critical thinking skills in speaking, writing, and listening, and the tension between faith, thought, and practice.
(Charles Wesley is still my favorite hymn-writer -- read through his hymns and you'll learn all about the sovereignty of God!)
Regarding American Baptist -- we've found the local ABC to be Southern-Baptist Lite. Our previous pastor (a good friend) was solidly Bible-based.
The current leadership sees absolutely "no problem" with Rob Bell, Nooma, Evelyn Underhill, Breath Prayers, Mytical practices, or Henri Nouwen (to name a few).
I've been frustrated and have scheduled face-to-face talks many times. I suppose the problem is completely mine.
But it seems to me we have a real problem in the ABC with focus on anything but the Bible.
